Going natural is very much in vogue these days, be it food, attire or even ones lifestyle. But even though us humans have a lot of options to pamper ourselves with, what about our humble canine friends? With the aim of eliminating everything artificial or processed (at home, the pet store or the dog wash), here’s how you can balance your dog’s diet without troubling yourself much.

Sometimes It’s easy to over think your dogs’ diet. Worries about ingredients, creating a balanced diet and sourcing. There are essentially three things to keep in mind when feeding a natural or raw diet to your pet dogs:

1 – You don’t have to balance every meal, you can balance the diet over longer periods. Guess what, you need not include bones or meat in every meal, but be sure to feed your pets these occasionally.

2 – You don’t have to go hunting or frequently visit the butchers to get fresh meat and bones. You can use a prepared base mix or meal balancer to help maintain the balance in your dog’s diet. You can hydrate a set amount of base mix (that comes with directions), mix in some raw meat, and serve.

3 – Keep in mind that each and every dog is different and what may be the perfect balanced diet for one dogs wouldn’t necessarily be appropriate for others. It’s important to learn about and monitor your dog’s health and behavior in order to ensure that your dogs are getting the nutrients they need.

Dog Food

With regards to raw feeding of pet dogs, there are mainly 2 models: The BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) Model and Prey Model. The BARF Model has the view that fruits and vegetables have a place in our dogs’ nutrition. As the name denotes, the Prey Model sees fruits and vegetables as unnecessary.

If using a meal balancer to supplement either of these, it’s important to go through the ingredients to avoid duplicating any supplements. Pay close attention to the instructions on the meal balancer to determine how much meat, kelp or liver to add to your pets feeding bowl. For example, if the meal balancer already accounts for liver, there is no need to further add this to the meal.

Raw feeding can be nutritious, but complicated, which it doesn’t have to be. As mentioned earlier, pay attention to your pet’s health and behavior to see what impact the diet has. Pay close attention to his body, hair and skin while at the dog wash. Another crucial indicator is the potty!

Light or white stool – reduce the bone content

Loose stool – more bone ingredients

 Dark stool – less heart

As you get to know your pet’s dietary inclination, you can come up with a list of what to watch out for and adjust accordingly. You can make use of this very useful (and free!) spreadsheet to keep track of your dogs’ nutrients.

This free spreadsheet can be of great help for raw feeders in covering the nutrient requirements for their pet dogs. This is not only a great way to learn about what each food item brings to the table and also ensures that your dog’s overall diet is balanced and healthy.

Balancing every meal can be the best way, but its better to balance out a dogs’ raw diet over a period of time, which can be a lot easier. You may not always be able to get your hands on all of the ingredients for a balanced meal every time. Instead, while focusing on balancing over time you don’t have to fret about what you do and don’t have. Make sure that your pet dog gets the nutrients that he needs, and is in the pink of health.
