Different dogs are suited to different climates. Every breed has it own unique type of fur coat. Dogs with thicker fur coat can survive in cold areas whereas dogs that have a shorter fur coat belong to warmer zones. To keep your short coat dog happy in cold regions, you must dress them up appropriately. Short coat dogs are somewhat like us with little or no clothes. So if you find the need to wear warmer clothes, they would want that as well.

If you live in a cold place, you must take extra care of you dog’s wellbeing. Look out for some indications to figure out if your dog is uncomfortable. Reluctance to go outdoors to take care of their private business. This is one such sign that they want to be warmer. Dress them up if you have the internal temperature set to low.

The ability of dog to keep warm depends on various things like breed, size and even age. The easiest way to figure this out is by measuring the thickness of their fur. Lighter furred dogs can’t actually retain heat. They will need some assistance to do so. Some basic warm clothes can make a huge difference to their well-being.

Short fur coat is not the only criteria to take into consideration in deciding whether they must be dressed. Sometimes with dogs like poodles, owners may choose to clip their long hair. This will take away their natural heat retaining adaptation. To counteract this, the owners must protect their dogs with sweaters. You will need to do the same with dogs with weak immunity or those with diseases impairing hair growth like Cushing’s disease and Hypothyroidism.

On the flipside, dogs with a thicker fur coat are designed to handle extreme temperatures. You must not force them into any clothes, as they will find it extremely uncomfortable. They may overheat and face other dire problems if you force clothes upon them. Their fur coat is an adaptation to protect them from extreme temperatures. Breeds like the Siberian Husky, Saint Bernard and Malamute are some examples of dogs that can comfortably survive extremely cold temperatures. On the other hand, breeds like Chihuahua, Terriers, Pinschers and Greyhound need some additional insulation to survive cold temperatures.

How to Find a Good Sweater

You must find a comfortable wool or cotton sweater that is washable. If you are concerned with durability you can choose acrylic. You must then take accurate measurements of your dog to make sure it fits. If it doesn’t fit well, they will be able to pull it off easily, drag it around collecting dust or it may even hinder their natural movement if it keeps getting stuck. It must be snug without being too tight.
