The origin of the breed has tied between France and Germany. The poodle has been a part of European dogs for a long time, but it is hard to pick the clear origin among France and Germany. American, Canadian, and British Kennel Club state that the breed originated in Germany as a water dog that was used for hunting purposes despite its link to France.
The Fédération Cynologique Internationale, the international organization of Kennel Clubs, which embodies both France and Germanys’ kennel clubs as its members, claims that the origin of the poodle breed in France as it is the descendent of France Baret. Germany got on board with the FCI’s claims to avoid any possible dispute between two countries and officially claimed poodle to be a French breed. The French name of Poodle is Caniche. The term Caniche comes from the word cane that means female duck. This type of poodle breed was used as a water retriever for hunting ducks because of its swimming ability. The French origin is more believable.

Even the Sun King had poodle as a pet, the evidence shows.
Variety of poodles
The poodle breed comes in three sizes commonly- standard, miniature, and toy. The American kennel club and British kennel club recognizes all three variants of this breed. The miniature and toy poodles are considered the scaled-down versions of the standard poodles. The standard poodle was later bred to form a smaller variant of this breed. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognizes four sizes of the poodle breed. Medium poodle, in addition to standard, miniature, and toy. Types of poodles Poodles come in a variety of colors too. Black, brown, white, apricot, red, silver, phantom, and Parti are some of the shades of their fur.
The Toy poodle was bred in England in the 18th century. The standard poodles were known as hunting, and working dogs whereas, smaller varieties such as the miniature and toy may have been popular for truffle hunting. The miniature and the toy poodle’s purpose was to be companions.
The original poodle is the standard kind. It is the tallest among all the poodle varieties. The standard poodle is about 38cms in height, and its weight goes up to 35kg. It was developed before the miniature and toy variant of the breed. In addition to being elegant and proud, standard poodles are the most intelligent and easily trainable poodle breed. All types of poodles also make excellent show dogs because of their obedient nature. They are impressive as watchdogs- friendly but protective.
Miniature poodles measure around 28-38cm in height and weight around 7-8kg. They are smaller than standard poodles but still taller than the toy poodle. The miniature poodle is crossbred with a variety of dogs, which makes them a favorable choice for those who desire crossbreeds.
The toy poodles are the most pampered dogs because of their size. They are the smallest of the three varieties of poodles. Toy poodles are 24 to 28cm tall and about 6kg heavy. Their small size doesn’t mean their qualities will become small too. Toy poodles are extremely intelligent, and obedient dogs. Their small size accounts for their need for excessive exercise. They are not just good for playing with them. They are utility dogs.
Breeders keep kind-of experimenting with different breeds. Poodles have a vast variety today as they are bred with other breeds too. Some common poodle hybrids are- Cockapoo, a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle; Labradoodle, a cross between Labrador and poodle; Shih poo, Shih Tzu and toy poodle parentage, and many others.
Poodles are known for their hypoallergenic coat. The hypoallergenic term means that they are less likely to trigger allergies, so even people with dog allergies can be in their company. The hypoallergenic coat is because of their tightly curled hair. Their hair grows in a curly way, and it slows the loss of dead and broken hair by keeping them trapped in the fur. Due to their fur type, poodles release a lesser amount of dander, broken hair, and other allergens like saliva in the environment as compared to any other breeds.
Being hypoallergenic does not constitute to the myth that they don’t shed any hair. All dogs shed; it is natural phenomena in dogs. Poodles only shed in a minimum amount. Also, regular shaving and hair cuts can release hair dust in the air too. Shaving is necessary for their maintenance.
